———————–Here’s a Maynard story you may not have heard–a testimony to his present moment awareness, his ability to be free of the past, his
ability to be free of all preconceived ideas, his ability to embrace “what is” and go with the flow of the Universe.The year was 1974. We had just returned from a tour break of around 3 weeks. Our first gig back was Newport at Carnegie Hall.
Lots of important people were there, including legends like Herseth, etc. As usual, Maynard hadn’t played at all on the break.
On that same break, a 22 year old me decided to make Maynard a mouthpiece that I felt would be better for him than his traditional
v-cup. I gave him the piece before the sound check. He proceeded to take out his current piece (the Holton v-cup that I had
previously opened to a 19), and placed my freshly cut unplated experimental piece in the horn. Uhhh, I didn’t mean now, Maynard.
However, he played the piece at the sound check and gig. After the gig, he walked up to me, handed the piece back to me and
said “thanks man”.I’m not sure how Maynard sounded, and I’m not sure it even matters. From what I could hear, he sounded great, but I was probably
too scared to carefully listen. I remember at the time Don Hahn said he sounded the best ever. I was just thankful Maynard
made it through the gig. For the record, the Carnegie piece was/is about .675″ ID (just measured it), much bigger than his
Holton v-cup that measured less than .600″. As you can see from the photos, the Carnegie piece had/has a very flat rim with
a good grip and extremely sharp inner bite. It had/has a 22 hole and the shank was shaved down to hit the pipe on our ST302s.
The piece was cut out of one of the Holton v-cups that Sandy Sandberg had given me, spun in a drill held by a vise. The backbore
had my magic exit ID, that I still use to this day. Even though the piece was somewhat v-cupped, it couldn’t have been much
different than what he was playing.Humans can’t do what Maynard did. He was in this world, but not of it. This story is just one from the dense world of form.
There was/is an even greater spiritual aspect to Maynard that defies Earthbound description. You could hear it in his sound and

This gig comes with a story:
On the way to the gig Stanley “Wanley” Mark and Ernie Garside kept insisting that
I had played there with the band previously. They just kept saying I was drunk and didn’t remember. It got so heated
that we bet 20 shots of whiskey on it. Of course I took the bet. Upon arrival they went into the club’s office to check
when the band last played there. It was before I had joined. I was having dinner alone and a waitress came over to my
table with 20 shots of whiskey. She seemed confused and just said, “I think these are for you”. I didn’t even flinch. I
told her to set them down on the table. I requested another order of bread and downed all 20 shots. Of course I had
been drinking all day on the bus too. By the end of “Give It One”, the opening tune, I had sweat all the booze out. -Danny

Lynn Nicholson: Yes, the last show of 1974. and my last day on the band. After the show, Maynard gave me his Calicchio mouthpiece
and simply said–This was the mouthpiece I played on Stan Kenton’s band. Long story short, I later gave him back the piece at his
home in Ojai, as we were playing around with various horns/mouthpieces (1975). Reason? He sounded great on the Calicchio, so I
insisted he take it back….He reluctantly agreed…. Today, I still play a copy of this piece, which I have always called the Holy Grail….
